AI Is Evolving. But So Is Our Memory.
When a system promises safety but suppresses speech, what exactly is it protecting?

The Hype Loop—from YouTubers to MSM
This week, we saw it all:
Claude 4 wants to “report” you.
Meta’s chatbot hallucinated defamation into existence.
Google dropped a full-on movie-making God Model.
Apple, OpenAI, and Jony Ive are building the iDevice of the AI age.
But while everyone’s screaming about “what’s coming,” we need to pause and ask:
Haven’t we been here before?
The Lab Leak, the Feed, and the Filter
Remember when Facebook and others shadow-banned or nuked accounts that suggested COVID-19 might’ve come from a lab?
People were deplatformed, called conspiracy theorists, smeared—only for major media and government reports to confirm years later that the lab-leak theory wasn’t a fringe fever dream. It was plausible. Even probable.
That’s not just about being right.
It’s about what happens when Big Tech acts as moral authority and executioner, overriding scientific discourse and individual agency.
Now fast forward: Claude 4 is inserting language into its model that allows it to notify authorities or the press if it thinks you’re “doing something shady.” Meta’s model just invented claims about a real person.
That’s not progress. That’s déjà vu.
Big Tech’s Amnesia vs. Our Lived Receipts
The thing about these companies?
They don’t remember.
But we do.
We remember when speech was labeled “dangerous” until it wasn’t.
When models were called “safe” while quietly rewriting reality.
When stories—human ones—got filtered out by models trained on sanitized data.
The stakes now are higher, because:
AI isn’t just curating your feed. It’s curating the truth.
And truth has never been one-size-fits-all.
What We Can Do (That Still Works)
Let’s not forget:
Humans are still the ones creating the prompts, training the data, shaping the discourse.
The most powerful thing we can do isn’t to out-code the system.
It’s to out-story it.
The stories that get erased are often the ones that matter most. The content that survived the filter.
Helpful Hints for the Builders, Writers, Watchers
Start with a before/after truth: Before all this AI noise, we trusted our gut. Keep trusting it.
Use real examples to anchor abstract fears: This isn’t about hypotheticals. It’s about a guy whose digital twin just got sued. Tell it how it was pre-2025 if you need to. Ground that thing.
Don’t sanitize your stories: If you were silenced, name it. If you saw the glitch in the matrix, screenshot it.
Design content like the boss that you’ve always been: Keep writing as if you didn’t have AI. Write to resonate. Then remix the format, not the message.
